In many ways, it’s an expected relationship: The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has allied with the American Association for Retired People (AARP) to create strategies that’ll help businesses hold on to valuable older workers.

The need for experienced employees is growing more acute each day.

A national survey of 1,000 people 50 and older done by SHRM and the AARP offers insight on what’s motivating experienced workers.

The survey included people who are employed and those who are seeking jobs.

Key findings included:

  • 78% said the primary motivation for working or seeking work at this time is financial – including health insurance coverage.
  • 19% said they were motivated by the desire to be productive, or even because they simply enjoyed the job.
  • 77% of people age 50 and older who are working said they’re planning to stay right where they are until it’s time to walk away into retirement.
  • 52% of the people looking for work said they’d prefer employment in the same field or profession of their previous job.
  • 27% of the unemployed people responding to the survey said they’re looking for a fresh start in a new field.
  • 18% would opt for the opportunity to open and operate their own business,

Businesses seeking to implement policies that’ll appeal to the 50-plus set, to encourage them to stay, include:

  • flexible work schedules
  • opportunities to increase on-the-job learning
  • affordable and fair health, and
  • fair and affordable health and retirement benefits.

It was announced last week at SHRM’s annual conference in Atlanta that SHRM has joined AARP to sponsor the annual AARP Best Employers for Workers Over 50 Awards.

Businesses that employ 50 or more people and have a reputation for being a progressive workplace can apply for 2013 honors.

The program was created by AARP in 2001.

It’s hoped that partnering with SHRM will help the effort reach an even larger audience – which can benefit from the ideas competing companies submit.

The deadline is Nov. 12, 2012.
